SURVEY RESULTS ON CD STORAGE PRODUCTS IN NIGERIA’S
IT MARKET

Jidaw.com has just concluded a survey in Nigeria’s IT Market
on CD and Multimedia Storage products. Here are the results of the survey.

CD-ROM drive, DVD-ROM drive & CD-writer
The survey focused on the above-mentioned storage devices, as they
are the most common in Nigeria’s IT Market.
CD-ROM drive only reads information stored on music CDs and CD-ROM discs.
A DVD-ROM disc can read CD-ROM discs, music CDs and DVD-ROM discs. The
CD-Writer allows you to record on a CD-Writable discs many times and
to read information stored on music CDs and CD-ROM discs.
Physical Appearance
These devices are physically the same except that CD-writer has more
weight and in front of it is written “CD-writer”. Enhance
Integrated Device Electronic EIDE and Small Computer System Interface
SCSI are the two common technologies for these devices. EIDE types are
commonly used because, they are cheap, available and is a standard for
most computer manufacturers. While SCSI are commonly used on server
systems and is more expensive. SCSI is good for server computers because
it has fault tolerance features such as RAID (Radial Array for Inexpensive
Disk).
Speeds
Different speeds are supported by these devices and these are shown
in front of the devices. For Instance, 56x (for CD-ROM drive); 16x (for
DVD-ROM drive); and 40x, 12x, 40x (for the CD-writer).
Storage
CD-ROM drive is the most popular type of drive that permits read only.
This device uses a media called CD-ROM disc, which can store up to 900MB
of information.
With today’s’ technology, information up to 4.7GB can be
stored on a special disc called Digital Versatile Disc (DVD). And the
Information on DVD-ROM can only be read by a special Drive called DVD-ROM
drive.
