Conference on Bridging the Digital and Scientific Divides: Forging Partnerships with the Nigerian Diaspora

French Version

14 July 2006 - Nigeria's Federal Ministry of Science and Technology and the Nigeria National Volunteer Service, NNVS are organizing the Science and Technology conference - "
Forging Partnerships with the Nigerian Diaspora." The conference will be held in Abuja, Nigeria from July 25 to 26, 2006.

What contributions can Africans living in the Diaspora make in transforming their countries of birth?

According to information from the conference organizers website, Nigeria recognize the huge and diverse resources of Nigerians living in the Diaspora and is determined to engage them to facilitate positive relationships and contributions in the interest of Nigeria. This led to the encouragement given by the government for the establishment of the Nigerians in the Diaspora Organisation (NIDO) and its determination to engage the Nigerian Diaspora to be involved in the imperatives of development in Nigeria. NIDO as a pan-Nigerian organisation was expected among others, to serve as a vehicle for the orderly and coherent mobilization of the Nigerian Diaspora.

The science and technology conference is therefore a practical way of achieving these noble objectives. It is a major effort "to lay the groundwork for concrete and sustained interaction between Nigeria and its Diasporans, facilitate the establishment of networks and partnerships between the Nigerian Diaspora and their counterparts at home for the benefit of the country and its people. It is also an opportunity to effect the transfer of skills, experiences and resources from the Diaspora.

According to the organizers the choice of science and technology as the first major initiative of the NNVS in this relationship is based the critical role science and technology plays in national development. In addition "the existence of huge human resources of the Nigerian Diaspora in the field of science and technology and the necessity to integrate them into the advancement of science and technology in Nigeria".

And there is also a need for Nigerians in the Diaspora to network with counterparts in Nigeria to facilitate knowledge exchange and transfer. In addition, there in the area of institutional linkages, Nigerians Diaspora could be involved in science and technology policy implementation, as well project identification and execution. Already NNVS is involved in the National Outsourcing Programme the presidential initiative for outsourcing projects and programmes from both the private and public sectors.

Nigerian professionals abroad and in Nigeria, especially professionals in the science and technology and other related areas, are expected to attend the conference.
