Young Scientists’ Regional Conference Announcement and Call for Application to participate in Nairobi, Kenya for Sub Saharan Africa


TWAS, the Academy of Sciences for the Developing World - Regional Office for Sub Saharan Africa, (TWAS-ROSSA), will hold its third young scientists’ conference in Nairobi, Kenya. The Conference will take place from 15th to 17th December 2008. The theme of the conference is “Alternative Sources of Energy: Potential for Renewable Energy and Biofuels in Africa” .

 

The conference will aim to:
· Discuss renewable energy needs for Africa during the current millennium;
· Chart the roadmap for sustainable renewable energy provided by biofuels obtained from non-food sources; and
· Advocate for capacity building and the appropriate policies for the relevant research and development.

 

The Conference will provide a platform for young (below 45 years of age) and senior scientists to take stock of advancements in the application of research and development of alternative sources of energy in Africa, as well as to exchange ideas and map the way forward for innovative networking mechanisms among scientists within the region.

There will be keynote addresses in plenary sessions by renowned experts, followed by in-depth analysis in working group discussions. Invitation is also extended to young scientists to make presentations in their research areas on renewable energy and biofuels. TWAS-ROSSA will appreciate to receiving in advance, all the presentations in order to compile the pre-proceedings for circulation to the Conference’s participants.

TWAS-ROSSA will cover travel (only from within sub-Saharan Africa), accommodation, meals and local transportation costs for selected participants. This support has been made possible by TWAS Central Offices in Trieste, Italy.

Applications to participate should only be made by young scientists below the age of 45 years.

The deadline for all applications to reach TWAS-ROSSA offices based at the African Academy of Sciences (AAS) is 10 August 2008.

Official invitation letters shall be circulated to successful applicants before 30 August 2008. Only successful applicants will be contacted.
