1) CISCO CCNA Certification

Cisco CCNA is the world's most popular entry-level networking certification program. A CCNA certification proves that the candidate has a solid foundation in Cisco product line -routers and switches. It also proves that that the candidate has broad knowledge of protocols and networking technologies..

Cisco CCNA exam tests a candidate's knowledge and skills required to install, operate, and troubleshoot a small to medium size enterprise branch network. The topics include connecting to a WAN; implementing network security; network types; network media; routing and switching fundamentals; the TCP/IP and OSI models; IP addressing; WAN technologies; operating and configuring IOS devices; extending switched networks with VLANs; determining IP routes; managing IP traffic with access lists; establishing point-to-point connections; and establishing Frame Relay connections.

A new version, 640-802, of its highly successful and popular CCNA certification as well a freshly minted new entry-level title, the Cisco Certified Entry Networking Technician (CCENT), will be available from August 1, 2007.

CCNA has been completely updated to go beyond routing and switching to include wireless, security, VOIP, DHCP/DNS/IPV.6, VPN and other important topics. The new exams will still contain hands-on simulation questions like previous CCNA exams.

The new CCNA will still be available in the two options format - either

When 640-607 replaced 640- 507 - March 12, 2002

Red Card for Paper CCNAs

(When 640-607 replaced 640-507 - March 12, 2002)
Cisco Systems released a new edition of its foundation level certification exam on March 12 2002. 640-607 replaces 640-507 as the Cisco Certified Network Associate exam. According to Cisco, the new version, #640-607, uses the same objectives as the previous one but now features hands-on simulation questions. To pass the new 640-607 exam that was released March 12th, you need to be able to show competence in configuring basic router commands using Cisco IOS software.
Such simulation questions would require the candidate to show what he or she can do a particular activity in a terminal emulation program or another simulated environment. A demonstration of the simulation portion of the exam is available here:
http://www.cisco.com/warp/public/10/wwtraining/certprog/testing/simulation/tutorial.html

The new CCNA exam still includes multiple-choice questions, but also features interactive questions that will "require cut-and-paste solutions, IP addressing input, and networking simulation comprehension." Although Cisco hasn't changed the objectives for the exam, the entire multiple-choice question pool has been replaced.
Although the new version would immediately replace the old version, anyone who registered for the CCNA of the exam before March 12 will still take the 507 version that they originally registered for, as long as the actual exam date is before April 23. Any new registrations for the CCNA will be for version 607.
CCNA is Cisco System's most popular entry-level certification, and requires passing one exam. Current titleholders won't have to take the new exam to retain their certifications. Cisco has a policy of keeping the CCNA credential valid for three years from the time a titleholder obtains it.

As expected, reactions have been mixed to this "bomb" dropped on the certification community by Cisco.
There have been major changes from 507 to 607 and those who prepared for 507 must know what extra work, if any, they must do to be ready to take and pass its 607 replacement.
The vital statistics for 607 are:
Questions: 55-65
Time Limit: 90 minutes
Passing score: 849 out of 1,000

So What's New
Reports from those who have taken the test and Cisco's official information indicate the following significant changes to note about the new exam:
* More hands-on questions
* More emphasis on experience and skills
* The old test seemed to test recall, where the new one seems to test synthesis - the ability to apply all that theory and knowledge to a network
* New cut-and-paste solutions question style
* More emphasis on IP addressing
* Several questions require students to interact with a simulator that works much like a real Cisco router
* Focus has changed from answering straightforward, factual questions to on-the-job type troubleshooting questions.
* More information than is needed is provided in the questions with information that one doesn't need to solve the problem, which only serves to confuse you.
* More challenging and requires more thought (and less rote memorization) than previous exams. More depth of coverage and the degree of knowledge expected than was the case on earlier versions of this exam.

The new CCNA exam is not for paper professionals. It is for candidates who prepare well and want to be able to engineer and configure networks and not just memorize answers in order to pass the exam.
How should you prepare for this new exam? Pay more attention to hands-on examples. If you can get access to some switches and routers, practice, practice, practice! Or you can work hands-on with a simulator, for using the scenarios as lab exercises to build better hands-on skills.

Visit the following pages for detailed information on the new CCNA certification:

Many still think Cisco pulled a fast one on us by not giving sufficient notice before the change. But we must concede that if 607 increases the value of the certification, it is a good thing for all concerned.

All the best,
